Damascus Hosts Launch of 2025–2026 Annual Report on Press Freedom in the Arab World
The conference was attended by General Federation of Arab Journalists President Moaid Al-Lami and Syrian Information Minister Khaled Zaarour, with the participation of approximately 18 Arab delegations.
The report examines the state of press freedom across the Arab world, drawing on reports submitted by journalistic organizations affiliated with the Federation. It also documents examples of violations against journalists and reviews the efforts undertaken by these organizations to support and promote freedom of opinion and expression.
Addressing the conference, Syrian Information Minister Khaled Zaarour said that the new Syria was moving towards establishing a free media sector founded on the fundamental principles of press freedom.
He noted that more than 700 journalists and media professionals had been killed during the Syrian revolution, paying with their lives for freedom. He added that the sacrifices made by Syrians provide the foundation for building a free media environment that reflects the aspirations of the Syrian people.
Zaarour said efforts were underway to rebuild the country and overcome what he described as the legacy of administrative inefficiency and weaknesses across various sectors inherited from the former regime.
He stressed that the media's role in reporting facts, placing events in their proper context and pursuing the truth requires an objective approach to addressing issues, rather than merely highlighting problems./End
