Hammam Hammoudi: Dialogue with Factions Is Key to Resolving Iraq’s Security Challenges
Hammoudi said an agreement with the factions consists of three phases, each lasting three months, beginning with a cessation of attacks and confidence-building measures.
Speaking at the Dialogue Forum in Basra Province, according to a statement issued by his office, Hammoudi said the government is working to end the presence of foreign military forces in Iraq, including Turkish troops and North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) forces.
He noted that an agreement had been reached to withdraw the Turkish opposition group, the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), and that efforts were underway to disarm Iranian Kurdish opposition parties operating in northern Iraq.
Hammoudi warned that some parties were seeking to undermine understandings aimed at bringing weapons under control, stressing that awareness and sound judgment are essential to preserving stability and protecting the political system.
On the economic front, Hammoudi said economic activity is closely linked to the regular payment and sustainability of public sector salaries. He noted that the prime minister faced a major test in maintaining the official exchange rate of the US dollar.
He also stressed the importance of complying with the prime minister’s decision prohibiting him and his deputies from receiving additional salaries and allowances.
Regarding the Coordination Framework, Hammoudi said the alliance had begun organizing its internal structure by establishing committees tasked with following up on strategic issues. Their responsibilities include security, economic, political and service-related affairs, as well as developing the necessary state-level vision for addressing these issues.
He added that completing the government’s formation and filling vacant ministerial posts would place the government in a position to assume its full responsibilities.
On the international front, Hammoudi said the world is undergoing rapid transformations, adding that Israel is facing growing international isolation.
Concluding his remarks, Hammoudi emphasized the need to safeguard independent national decision-making, raise public awareness and coordinate efforts to strengthen Iraq’s sovereignty and stability and fulfil the aspirations of the Iraqi people. / End
