Press Review: Iraqi Newspapers Highlight Regional Cooperation and Calls for Constitutional Reform
Al-Sabah newspaper reported that Prime Minister Ali Faleh al-Zaidi stressed that the major challenges facing countries across the region require concerted efforts and enhanced joint action to develop solutions to economic and development crises and promote stability.
According to a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Media Office, al-Zaidi received Robert Malley, honorary president of the International Crisis Group (ICG) and director of its Middle East programme, along with an accompanying delegation, in Baghdad on Monday. The delegation included the programme’s deputy director and the director of the Gulf and Arabian Peninsula project.
Al-Zaidi said the repercussions of regional challenges had extended to the global economy as a whole, adversely affecting supply chains.
He called on the International Crisis Group to draw on its expertise and resources and present its assessments and proposals to help address ongoing crises and support decision-makers and international stakeholders.
The prime minister also underscored the importance of creating opportunities for dialogue and broadening its scope to help the parties concerned identify common ground. He noted that Iraq had made, and continued to make, considerable efforts in this regard.
The meeting also addressed the major issues and crises affecting the region, with discussions focusing on possible solutions amid continuing instability and conflicts across the Middle East.
For his part, Malley expressed the International Crisis Group’s readiness to mobilise its expertise and resources in support of the Iraqi government’s efforts and policies aimed at resolving regional crises, strengthening stability and bringing differing viewpoints closer together.
Al-Zawraa newspaper, published by the Iraqi Journalists Syndicate, highlighted the syndicate’s appreciation of Supreme Judicial Council President Judge Dr. Faiq Zaidan’s call for the Council of Representatives to review the provisions of the Constitution, introduce the necessary amendments and address the problems arising from its implementation and interpretation, which have contributed to delays in fulfilling constitutional obligations.
In a statement, the syndicate stressed that the call represents both a legal responsibility and a historic opportunity requiring all parties to work seriously and sincerely to strengthen and develop Iraq’s democratic and political system and address the shortcomings identified by the Supreme Judicial Council president.
The syndicate noted that Zaidan would not have made such a call at this sensitive juncture in Iraq’s history without drawing on his extensive experience, sound judgment and close monitoring of the challenges facing the country’s democratic and political system since 2003.
It added that his legal and ethical responsibilities, commitment to upholding the rule of law and justice, and concern for the country’s supreme interests had prompted him to identify shortcomings in the constitutional provisions and advocate fundamental solutions through the necessary amendments. These measures, it said, are intended to meet the needs of the state, advance Iraq’s democratic experience, strengthen state authority and the rule of law, and safeguard both societal rights and individual freedoms.
The Iraqi Journalists Syndicate further pointed out that the Supreme Judicial Council president had noted that practical experience had exposed problems in the implementation and interpretation of the Constitution, contributing to delays in meeting constitutional obligations, particularly the election of the president of the republic and the identification of the largest parliamentary bloc.
The syndicate and the wider journalistic community declared their support for any proposals and recommendations put forward in this regard, pledging to promote them through the media in a manner that serves Iraq’s interests, progress and stability./End
